How Do You Know When It’s Time to Replace Your Windows?

Windows don’t last forever. In San Angelo’s climate, the shifting temperatures between long, intense summers and short but often brutal winters can warp and wear them out faster than you think.

Summer is barely in the rearview mirror, but a hazardous winter may be on the horizon. According to The Farmers’ Almanac, this coming winter will bring a wetter-than-normal, highly stormy season with occasional surges of bitter cold across our area. Moisture from El Niño could bring sleet, freezing rain, and/or heavy wet snow.

If you notice any of these four critical warning signs, the time to act is now:

  • Increasing Energy Bills: If your monthly utility bills are steadily climbing, your windows may be the culprit. When seals fail, air escapes, forcing your HVAC system to work overtime. This often shows up first in your energy costs.
  • Cold Drafts and Hot Spots: Walk past your windows on a hot or cold afternoon. If you feel a distinct wave of heat or cold, or a breeze while they are completely closed, your windows are no longer insulating your home properly.
  • Difficulty Opening or Closing: Windows should open and close smoothly. If they stick, jam, refuse to stay open, or won’t lock securely, it is a major safety hazard and a sign of structural warping.
  • Condensation Between Panes: Seeing fog, moisture, or water droplets trapped between double-pane glass? This means the insulating argon gas has leaked out and the factory seal is permanently broken.

Don’t wait for your comfort to suffer. Time is of the essence since new windows may require pre-ordering, meaning there may be a typical delivery lead time of one to six weeks, depending on your specific window selection.
